'One person's guess about how much a house will rent out for.' That's what some of these appraisals come down to, and it's fixable: real rent comps, and a cap on how many of these loans one borrower can stack. I'm less sold on the déjà vu with 2008, because these are loans to landlords against rent, in a market far smaller than the one that blew up then.

Ellie has the national numbers. The Baltimore part is near the end: after what happened to those 700 homes, some private lenders stopped lending in the city altogether, and the crumbling row homes that needed investment are still sitting there. Priya's right that it's a smaller market than 2008. If I were covering it I'd be asking the council who fixes the row homes now.
