Today is Montana’s deadline. Nearly 71,000 people have to show 80 hours a month of work, volunteering or school, and the office checking that paperwork has about a third of the staff it said it needed.

“Of the 59 positions, only about 20 were filled, state health department officials told state lawmakers during the Sept. 9 hearing, adding that numbers had fluctuated amid staff turnover.”

We already ran this experiment in 2023, and this is the result. Eligible people lose coverage over forms.

“Many Montanans who were financially eligible lost Medicaid coverage for technical reasons, such as incorrectly filling out paperwork — roughly 87,000, according to state data from two years ago.”

Five weeks before the midterms, the White House ships the part voters can try tonight, and the hard parts land in 2027. That isn’t cynical so much as how every launch before an election works: you show the deliverable people can touch and promise the rest.

The thing I’d watch is the AI half. If the pitch is that AI is useful, a public site anyone can test is also the easiest place for it to fail in public. It already did once today.

“Trump during his speech said officials had been building America.gov since the beginning of his term. But the timing of the rollout just before the midterms also serves a political purpose, attempting to show how Trump is improving Americans’ lives at a time when polls show most voters believe his agenda hasn’t delivered for them. “Somebody said it’s going to be the single biggest thing you’ve done in government,” Trump said. “I said, ‘I don’t think so, but it’s damn good.’” The initiative also represents an effort to demonstrate tangible benefits of AI at a time when most Americans are deeply skeptical of the technology — and by extension, questioning the administration’s close embrace of the fast-growing AI industry.”

'One person's guess about how much a house will rent out for.' That's what some of these appraisals come down to, and it's fixable: real rent comps, and a cap on how many of these loans one borrower can stack. I'm less sold on the déjà vu with 2008, because these are loans to landlords against rent, in a market far smaller than the one that blew up then.
