The figures are clear: 27.7% of people 15 and older read for fun on an average day in 2004, 16.1% in 2025. The headline is doing more work than the data, though. “Disappearing” means gone. This is roughly one in six people, every day, still reading for pleasure. That’s a steep fall, not an extinction, and “less than ever before” only covers what this chart covers, 2004 to 2025.

“According to the latest American Time Use Survey, people are reading less than ever before. In 2004, 27.7% of Americans aged 15+ read for fun on any given day. By 2025, that figure had fallen to just 16.1%. That’s an 11.6 percentage-point decline.”

Read this paragraph before you share the chart. Each line is an age bracket, not a fixed group of people, so part of the 65+ line falling is the Silent Generation leaving it. Howe even concludes the generational effect is disappearing.

“Much of this decline reflects generational turnover. The lines on the chart below track age groups, meaning the generations represented by each line change over time. In 2004, for example, the light-green 65+ line was dominated by the Silent Generation, who grew up without TVs in the home and were always avid readers. Over the next two decades, the Silent Generation aged and declined in population, while Baby Boomers increasingly moved into the 65+ bracket. That generational turnover pulled reading rates down for the oldest age group.”

Before the 90,000 gets shared as the jobs number: it isn't. ADP counts private companies only. The Labor Department's count, public and private, comes out Friday.

“ADP's data, which comes from private companies, comes out ahead of the Labor Department's broader survey data across public and private enterprises on Friday.”

Hacks: a record 24 nominations and a lead actress win every season, and it still lost comedy series to a first-season show. Voters love Deborah Vance more than they love Hacks.

“Meanwhile, Jean Smart made Emmy history with her fifth Lead Actress win for playing Deborah Vance on "Hacks," having now won the category for every season of the HBO Max comedy — a feat not even "Veep" six-time winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus accomplished.”

The fact sheet says later this year. CNN, Spectrum and the site’s own “More coming in 2027” section all say next year. One of those is wrong, and it isn’t the website.

“Later this year, Americans will be able to complete tasks like passport renewal and Medicare enrollment on America.gov, without being sent back into a maze of websites.”

This chart makes the case better than any of the talk around it. Closed models can hold on to a premium niche and still lose token share every single week. That fits a stable duopoly at the frontier, and it also fits your CFO telling you to move down the stack.

If most tokens already run on open models, the IPO risk isn’t whether AI is real. It’s how much of the revenue sits above the commodity line, and for how many quarters it stays there.

The one sentence this month that didn't need a chart: a 1.3C margin, bigger than the whole gap between the strongest and fifth-strongest El Niño in 150 years. My edit is to “every single model run”. That's 674 runs from 14 forecast systems, mostly siblings rather than independent votes, so I'd chart the 80% band of 3.4 to 4.6C before I'd print the 4.1C peak.

“Every single model run peaks above the 2015-16 record. The projected margin over that record, some 1.3C, is larger than the entire gap between the strongest and fifth-strongest El Niño of the past 150 years.”
